Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 18 Review(s)

Any mob, particularly a political mob, is dangerous, after being whipped up by their leader they are leaderless, going blindly to do what they consider is just.

I am glad Eonwe and his Warrior Maia were there to protect Glorfindel and his friends, as someone has already mentioned it would have been a blood bath. I hope Dave and the D.A. throw the book at them and make it stick!

I hope Dearon recovers quickly, though I think Ron will need a bigger couch at this rate!

As for the statue, I have always liked the image of Fionwe in his Finn disguise, in hie jeans and plaid shirt and Eagles Wings, I think it should be set up in the town square to remind people of just how close they came to anarchy.

Joins Rikki and Kaylee at the Cliff House with a large dish of lasagna, a big salad and a case of Angry Orchard Cider, lets send Fiondil off in style!

Huggs,
Lynda

I am so glad people are reviewing this chapter as I enjoy seeing what other people have to say as much as I enjoyed reading Fiondel's writing. And a huge thank you to the admins who are continuing to release this story.

I spent the time from reading the last chapter until this one thinking about how Fiondel would have decided the election. I finally decided that Peterson would not win and the elves would not retreat and leave behind the other mortals that had been supporting them. The fact that a mob was coming to attack the elves whether Peterson won or not was sad in fact though it truly repeats what we see in our own world. Having Eonwe and Namo show up prevented a rather large blood bath as I am sure no one would have stepped back from the confrontation and thought about the consequences first. All of the participants from the mob may not change after meeting the Lord of Death, but I am certain that they will gain a hardy respect for the things they have witnessed tonight. That they could also be in trouble for attempted murder may help to keep them in line. Hopefully Darren will recover in time though I think the event will affect him as much as Glorfindel's attack affected him. And yes, that statue was cute!

Though you are gone from the circles of this world Fiondel, I hope that you can see the love and respect that you have left behind and how many people you have affected with your writing and sharing your knowledge of Tolkien. I am off to the Cliff House and hope others will be there so we can have a rousing wake in your honor. Hold a spot for me Kaylee and I will bring food and drinks for all.

[rolls eyes] Don't those people realize that guns are useless against a real demon? If the Elves had been demons, no amount of shooting would have done any good. The weapons that work against the devil and his angels are not the world's weapons but spiritual weapons, and they are described in the Book of Ephesians. Someone needs to refer these people to Ephesians 6:10-18 and 2 Corinthians 10:3-5!

A very intense chapter with a lot of twists and turns.

Some of the things I found significant: the mob had clearly decided to attack whether their candidate won or lost; they brought weapons; they consisted of both men and women; and in spite of how well the Elves defended the mob was determined on violence. Only the intervention of the Maiar prevented a total bloodbath. These people weren't thinking straight (mobs seldom do) but I can't help but wonder if they are being influenced by the Other Side?

The appearance of Eonwe was dramatic and that of Namo even more so, literally preventing murder. Although attempted murder is still not off the table, especially once Dave Michaelson gets hold of those names.

And I do enjoy that even in such a serious situation, we get a chance to appreciate Fiondil's patented humor: "Cute!"

I'm glad to see everyone still here, and still contributing. I'm sure it pleases Fiondil as he looks on from his own special vantage point.

As others seem to have already pointed out, some sections of this chapter seemed a little too fitting, in light of recent events. I am glad that everyone got out okay, though I suspect our most recent arrivals may have found the whole experience of being fired upon...enlightening as to just who/what they are dealing with.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank those who made and continue to make this work available to us, and to say that I have never before witnessed such an outpouring of love and support in a fanfiction community as I have here in the past few days as we all grieve this loss. As someone who did not know Fiondil as well as she might have liked, I feel that this speaks volumes for the sort of person he must have been. It also speaks to what a lovely, respectful and supportive group of folks that you all have here at SoA (not an easy thing to achieve in a fanfiction archive, it seems).

I sincerely hope that you are all doing well.

With love from the Mitten in my little corner of the world.

Again, I want to express my thanks for continuing posting this series. I think all of us would not have wanted to miss the chapter in the world! After a long build-up of silence before the storm, this was a very intense chapter.

Sometimes, Námo can spare a life, and sometimes he will take one unexpectedly. I found this somehow incredibly fitting right now, it gave me goosebumps.

This being said, I found Fiondil only rarely killed off his characters, unless this was either cannon or in cannon with his own work. I always delighted in the characters pulling through whatever he put them up agains.

Kaylee, I too think the events of turning the weapons into a certain statue (and I always loved the subtle humor given to some of the Maiar) were inspired by a similar event long ago on Tol Eressea. And of course the Cliffhouse we had so much fun in, is in real the Cottage of Lost Play, how could we ever not recognize it.

Take care and hugs everyone!

Fiondil, you may not be able to read them any more, but I will continue to review whenever I can, because your work deserves the recognition. I couldn't help but think that the Valar need to hurry up with the satellite connection to Valinor and beyond, so you can read the reviews even from beyond the circles of the world, even if you aren't allowed to answer.

The stupidity of these Peterson supporters astounds me. First the attempt to blow up Edhellond, and now they come as an armed mob? And they do think they can get away with it, when too many in the town already know which party is against the Elves? Dave would be on their tracks instantly, wouldn't he?

Yay for Eönwë and the Maiar turning up and protecting the Elves! That's a force these fanatics haven't reckoned with, no doubt.

Eönwë found a rather creative way to deal with all the weapons. Making a statue of himself is a much better use for the metal and wood :)

And now even Námo came! Somehow I think when these Mortals are going to pass on one day, he will have a serious talk with them, and they won't like it one bit.

I was rather upset that Daeron was injured, and that seriously! These Mortals are lucky that Finrod and Námo were able to save him, or they'd have a murder on their consciences. I totally like the idea of Eönwë giving Dave their names, so they can be held responsible for what they did. It certainly was more the quick reaction of the Elves than any merit of the Mortals that there was only one Elf hit.

Actually, I agree with Námo here. Leave the statue there and put her somewhere where everyone can see it. Not so much to keep Glorfindel in line, but to remind the Mortals that the Elves are under the protection of higher beings.

Do these idiots even realise how ironic the whole thing is? They see the Elves as demons, but these demons are now defended by angels of light. Add to that Erunáro healing that man and Eönwë turning the weapons into a statue could easily count as a miracle of the sort the bible would approve of, right? Plus, the way they saved Daeron. If that doesn't show them the truth, I don't know what will, but admittedly, that type of people isn't very open to logic or common sense.

Ai, Atarinya, I can only imagine just how much fun you were having when you wrote this chapter. I know you will never be able to respond to my review in person, but I hope somewhere in Mandos, Lord Námo is keeping you appraised of those of us who love you and your works.

I am so glad Peterson is out, though I guess Locke winning doesn't guarantee smooth sailing by far. Thank Eru that Lord Námo and Eönwë were on watch, keeping track of doings amongst the Elves and Mortals. The burning of the weapons into a slag heap (or, in this case, a statue of a certain Herald, rather) calls to mind another attack all the way back on Tol Eressea. I'm sure that's what you were thinking of, even if you can never tell me so for certain.

Until and unless Alassiel and Ellie can tell us from your family what's to happen, I'm assuming all we've got is your memorial at the Cliff House (which I suspect is really the Cottage of Lost Play in disguise, quite honestly.) I've hung the walls with Finrod and Glorfindel's sigils together, and Lord Námo's as well as the other Valar. There's a buffet table and I imagine between us we can make it into a feast you would be proud of, as we celebrate your life and your works together.

I've petitioned Lord Námo and the other Valar for an eternal Flame to be set in the pleasance (garden) surrounding the Cliff House. Let's hope they will agree to that request.

With eternal love and gratitude, your yeldë indonyo,

Kaylee Arafinwiel
