Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 27 Review(s)

I sure wish that Fiondil was still alive, for I have a question to ask him. In this epilogue, he included the first two of the Istari, the Blue Wizards, to go to Middle-earth to battle Sauron. The Istari, however, were not sent to Middle-earth until a thousand years into the Third Age, and the epilogue is set in 1195 of the Second Age.

Ha! I finally finished it!

I really enjoyed reading about Glorfindel's time in Aman after he was reborn. Once again, you did an excellent job of writing the tensions between differing groups of Eruhini.

Oh, and I guessed that Sador would be the Cano before you started hinting it. I got so excited I was right that I got in trouble with my housemates for cheering.
~Eruherdiriel

Author Reply: Hi Eruherdiriel. I'm glad you enjoyed this. Don't forget to read the spin-offs: "The Findaráto Diaries", which describes Finrod's adventures as a Reborn before Glorfindel and Sador join him, and "A Long Expected Wedding", which is about Finrod and Amarië's wedding, of course.

Some people either guessed or hoped that Sador would become Cáno, so you're in good company. I'm sorry you got in trouble with your housemates over it, though. I hope you've made up. *grin*

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I appreciate it very much.

Truly a masterful and compelling epic. I am awed by the Tolkien knowledge you have woven into your tale. I was weeping by the final chapter and there were many, many touching moments throughout the story. I wonder how long it must have taken for you to write such a detailed account of Glorfindel's time between death and returning to Middle Earth to fulfill his oaths to Turgon and his line. Beautifully written. I hope you have written some further accounts of Glorfindel in Middle Earth.

Author Reply: Hi GLory Bee. I'm so glad you enjoyed this epic. I started EI-1 in November of 2006 and posted the last chapter of EI-2 in August of 2010, so almost 4 years in the making. If you're looking for more Glorfindel stories, you can read my "Elf Academy" and I have started a sequel. "Elf Academy 1" is from the viewpoint of Glorfindel for the most part. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I really appreciate it.

What a long and wild ride. It ends on a high note with Glorfindel meeting Elrond. I'm sorry to see this story end. But I have already the notifications for the next story in my inbox.
I have grown fond of all your characters, especially Glorfindel, Sador, Finrod and Vorondil. My favorite Vala is Namo. You make the Valar seem so approachable and seemingly alien at the same time. Nobody could mistake them for elves or men. They are a race on their own.

Author Reply: Hello obsidianj. I'm so glad you enjoyed this epic tale and that you are looking forward to reading the next story, which, given that it's about the events leading up to and after the Darkening, is not as 'fun' as this story is but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. I'm glad you like my characters, both canon and non-canon, and Námo, of course, is my favorite Vala, as well. I am glad you find the Valar both approachable and alien. That is what I aim for, because, as you say, they are neither Elves nor Men, but a race unto themselves, the first of Eru's creation. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I really appreciate it.

Dear Fiondil,

As I stated earlier, I waited to read Elf, Interrupted: Book Two when you finished it completely. I was not disappointed. All along the way, I tried to conjure a means for Glorfindel to rationally return to Middle Earth, other than being told by the Valar. You arrived at the most perfect of solutions - to complete a oath. Also, I truly enjoy how you keep the magic of Tolkien's mythology, but still allow for science. Aman is a place where people may never die, but it certainly is not a boring place either. Eru will keep the Elves very busy evolving and growing for the time when "they" are needed to care for Middle Earth. The banner will be passed from the Valar to the Eldar in the end. You gave us a tiny peek in Elf Academy. Once you have finished Darkness Bound, I'm sure that I'll enjoy it, too. Thank you for your creativity, sticking to canon, and sharing with the many fans of Tolkien.

Sincerely,
Arasinda

Author Reply: Hello Arasinda,

I am glad you enjoyed Elf, Interrupted so much. I like to find 'scientific' explanations for the mythology and incorporate it into my stories, since Tolkien does tell us that Arda is merely our own Earth at an earlier geological age. And yes, I do believe that the Elves were always meant to be the teachers and mentors of the Younger Races and take over the governance of Arda from the Valar eventually.

And In Darkness Bound is actually completed; I'm just posting 2 chapters a week. So you might as well start reading it now because by the time the last chapter is posted it will be next November. *grin*

Anyway, thanks for reading Elf, Interrupted and letting me know how much you enjoyed it. I appreciate it very much.

He smiled to himself, recalling how there had always been at least a dozen Maiar and two Valar in attendance whenever those particular lessons were being taught and always in some remote corner of the continent where there was little chance of others being harmed if things went wrong.

Hee-hee. I now picture the Valar and Maiar standing around the two of them in protective suits complete with gas masks, fire extinguisher in the one hand, a bucket of water in the other.

Your marking some ambivalence on Glorfindels's part regarding Elrond has me intrigued considerably. Will you be exploring Glorfindel's further adventures as he arrives in Lindon and the beginning of his friendship with Elrond (who is one of my very favourite characters)? Have you perhaps already written snippets of that somewhere in your short stories?

Oh, my, there is Glorfindel on his knees, solemny giving the Lord of Mandos his sword, and what is the grave oath he gets in answer? An oath that made me laugh out loud and long in the juxtaposition of the moods...

Elrond is so cute in his shyness, still so awfully young. Glorfindel will do him a world of good to bring him out in the open. And that last paragraph just broke my heart. Ended on a perfect note.

Thank you, Fiondil, for once again writen such a thoroughly engrossing tale and sharing it with us! And now I'm really looking forward to find (some *g*) long-awaited answers in your story about the Darkening.

Author Reply: I don't have specific plans to write Glorfindel/Elrond stories per se, but I will no doubt write some short stories as the Muse inspires me to do so. I have, of course, written at least one 'Glorfindel-in-Lindon' story that you can find in my Tapestry series. It is, in fact, the last story in the series, though it revolves around Glorfindel and Erestor. I do have a story coming up in my Loom series that deals with life in Imladris and Glorfindel, naturally, is the main character. I will be posting that story soon.

And now that you have completed reading "Elf, Interrupted", you can devote your attention to "In Darkness Bound", the first chapters of which were posted this past week. *grin* I hope you enjoy it as much as you have enjoyed this story.

Thanks for all your reviews, Imhíriel. I have enjoyed reading each and every one of them.

Well done! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to review, but I've been on vacation, so it's been a nice surprise to catch up and find Glorfindel returning to Middle Earth. I love the way this one ends. I particularly like the way Glorfindel puts Elrond's needs first above even Gil-Galad. Will there be a part 3 to this story? I'd love to see how you handle the remainder of the Second Age. Again, great job!

Author Reply: Hi Little Mouse. I'm glad you loved the way the story ended. At this time there are no plans for a part 3 although I hope to write an occasional piece about Glorfindel in Middle-earth and perhaps eventually write about his return to Aman. In the meantime, I have my Darkening story which is all set to go and I will begin posting that this week. So you have something to look forward to. *grin* Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Hi Fiondil,

Thank you so much for this wonderfull story. It has been a long and wild ride and I am sorry to see it end here, but I can't wait for your Darkening story. I do hope you won't abandon the EI universe and will maybe some day show us Glorfindel's adventure's in Endore and perhaps his return to Aman??
I have been reading and rereading both EI 1 and 2 from the beginning and am already starting to suffer from withdrawl symptoms *grin* Keep up the good work because I for one can't wait to read more.
Hugs Selene

Author Reply: Hi Selene. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing and letting me know how much you've enjoyed this story and that you are looking forward to my Darkening story. And not to worry. I have long thought to write a story about Glorfindel's return to Aman as well as other stories in the EI-verse. Once I get the Darkening story up and on its way, then I will see about other stories about Glorfindel and the gang. I left plenty of space for gap-fillers at the end of EI-2, as you may have noticed. *grin*

Hi Fiondil,

I just want to let you know that EI has been a beautiful journey through the universe that you have created, and that I have enjoyed it to the fullest. I want to say thank you for sharing your colorful tales with such dedication (How many years has it been since you began? I can't even remember).

Needless to say, you can bet that I will be eagerly awaiting your darkening story.

Much applause...

Author Reply: Hello ninquestilmen. Thank you for letting me know how much you've enjoyed reading EI. I am glad you found them beautiful and colorful. I first started posting on SoA in January 2006, so it's been over 4 years now. Hard to believe it's only been 4 years. *grin* I am glad you are eagerly looking forward to reading my Darkening story. I'm rather excited about it, myself. *grin*

What a great way to end this wonderful story. Glorfindel seemed so mature and at ease once he got off the ship; ready to take on his duties come what may.

I especially loved the little scene between Namo and Glorfindel and the sword exchange; very moving. I take it Eonwe was somewhere in the background recording every word?!

Thanks for taking me along on this journey of Glorfindel, Finrod and everyone else. I look forward to your next story.

Author Reply: Hi Ces. Thank you. I'm so glad you liked how the story ends. Glorfindel has had 685 years since between accepting his mission to come to Middle-earth and actually going, so it's no wonder that he is more mature and at ease here compared to how he was even in the previous chapter.

I am glad you liked the sword exchange scene. I think that is a lot of people's favorite in this chapter. I'm sure Eönwë was somewhere around at the time. *grin*

Thank you for joining me on this wonderful journey with Glorfindel, Finrod and all the others. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review and I am glad to hear you are looking forward to my next major story, which I will begin posting a week from this coming Monday.
