Tales of the Innkeeper  by Allee 49 Review(s)

How delightful to see another entry in this well-crafted series!

You manage to let us know so very much of the Innkeeper, his Anira, and Carandol from their reactions to the King.

I liked Elessar's remeniscencing of Caradhras--I have a feeling that though he was remembering the cruel cold, he was also remembering the Fellowship. And I liked his response to Carandol's restlessness--it sounds like that lad might have just a touch of ADD!

And this line:
And I can’t say that I’m too surprised; strange as it sounds, Elessar is a bit like sunlight, fresh air, and wide-open spaces.

That was lovely!

Author Reply: Thank you, Dreamflower. So glad you're enjoying this series. This chapter is certainly long over-due, but future Innkeeper vignettes shouldn't be so long in coming.

It hadn't occurred to me that Carandol might have a touch of ADD, but it would certainly explain quite a bit, wouldn't it?

Yes, I think that as Elessar thought of Caradhras, he also thought of the Fellowship. One thing I love about writing the Innkeeper series is that I get to include little snippets of Elessar's memories here and there.

Again, thank you for your comments!

He smiled a wistful sort of smile then, one I’d not seen before, and have to tell you, I think I like that smile on him best of all. ’Reckon I’d become somethin’ of an expert on the King and his many smiles. Not many a man can say that!

Elessar is a bit like sunlight, fresh air, and wide-open spaces.

Come to think of it, with the King under our roof, maybe it wasn’t so harsh a winter after all.

These are very enjoyable -- and unique -- glimpses of our beloved king. :)

Author Reply: Thanks so much. Glad you're enjoying the Innkeeper series. Master Innkeeper certainly has had the rare opportunity to see some unique glimpses of the King, and that's what makes these vignettes so enjoyable to write.

What a wonderful moment, and wonderful memories, to know that joyous presence; and to see Aragorn remembering Caradhras. Yes, cruel indeed that mountain was.

Author Reply: Glad you liked it. I didn't intend to throw the Caradhras bit in when I started this chapter, but it showed up, nevertheless.

I like to think that Aragorn did indeed have a joyous presence. Hopefully, it's beginning to rub off on Carandol.

I like the idea of stars walking around on earth with us. :)

By the way, I've read all the chapters and they're lovely. Maybe you could write something Faramir related? Hopefully? I'm hopelessly in love with him-- not in that way, but he's certainly my favorite character. I do enjoy the way you portray Aragorn here, though.

Continue! :D

Author Reply: Hmmmm . . . well, I certainly hadn't planned on writing Faramir into one of these vignettes, but then, I never expected to mention Gimli in them either, but suddenly, there he was! For that matter, I never expected to write more that the first vignette (not to mention the ongoing story of Carandol, etc). So, who knows? I'm glad you're enjoying them, and I'm sure there will be more, although I don't know when (real life is a little intense at the moment!). Thanks again for your comments.

Again, very insightful. I also like the way you write the inkeeper; I can almost imagine him saying it out loud.

Author Reply: I can hear the innkeeper so well when I'm writing him that it becomes very easy to write him. He keeps me quite entertained!

Your summary, from the start, drew me in. I think I'll really enjoy these little stories. This first one was very insightful, too-- though I've always respected Denethor as a leader, I do think Aragorn would be more of a people's man. Lovely first chapter. Now I'll go off and read the rest. :D

Author Reply: Thanks you for your comments, and I'm glad you're enjoying the vignettes. They're certainly fun to write. I think you've given a perfect description of what I meant to accomplish by writing Denethor into this first vignette. My intention was not to disparage Denethor but to show that he and Aragorn likely interacted quite differently with the common man. I think Aragorn's background as a ranger and his time spent at places like the Prancing Pony would have made him more of a "people's man" too.

Great chapter, Glad to see that the boy has some good qualities. Glad also that the innkeeper and the king all have bits or Arda to look after.

Author Reply: Yes, I thought I'd go a little easy on Carandol this time! He can't be all bad.

Author Reply: Thank you so much. I'm glad you discovered the Tales of the Innkeeper and that you're enjoying them. I'm not sure when the next installment will appear, but I'm sure the innkeeper will be back. It's hard to keep him quiet! ;)

This is one very sharp innkeeper! And he's getting a very valuable insight into the mind and habits of the king - and I think the king is appreciating the exchange. But then, a monarch who warmed his feet at the fire in the Prancing Pony would value the down-to-earthness of a good innkeeper as he runs his own microcosm of a kingdom.

Author Reply: I agree--Elessar's experiences as a ranger make him more appreciative of the innkeeper than a monarch might otherwise be. I certainly think that Elessar's time with the innkeeper is proving valuable to both parties. Thank you for your comments!

I'm delighted to see these here as I enjoy reading them very much. You capture Aragorn's character briliantly.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Linda. I'm flattered! I'm glad you enjoying reading these vignettes; I certainly enjoy writing them!
